In late 2018 we had a look at our product range and realised we were missing a feed that was designed especially for small birds and fledglings.
Rather than just mixing some small seeds together we wanted to create the ultimate small bird food that was high in nutritional value. After sitting down to look at ingredients we realised we already had everything we needed in our Ready Peck suet range, which was developed alongside an ornithologist to contain the very best ingredients for the wild birds we get here in the UK.
So we took our best recipe and best selling product, Ready Peck Insect & Mealworm Suet Pellets, and made them small bird and fledgling friendly - and our Ready Peck Insect & Mealworm MINI Suet Pellets were born!
What Are Mini Suet Pellets?
The name says it all, really! Our new Mini Suet Pellets are simply a smaller version of our flagship, best-selling product Ready Peck Insect & Mealworm Suet Pellets. Our Mini Suet Pellets are 3mm wide and, at most, 10mm long; roughly the size of a sunflower seed and around 40% smaller than most regular pellets.
Mini Suet Pellets Ingredients
Suet, Wheat Flour, Oat Flour, Peanut Flour, Maize, Millet, Dried Insects, Oyster Shell Flour, Food Colour.
Suet pellets are the ultimate high energy food so we use the very best suet, peanut flour, millet and dried insects which are all high in energy and protein for birds. Small amounts of wheat and oat flour are used to bind the suet together, both of which also provide energy. We also add oyster shell flour for added calcium, and our home-grown millet is high in vitamin B, iron and protein.
Our pellets are free from whole wheat grains - our blend of wheat, oat and peanut flours can help to deter unwanted garden birds, like Pigeons, who typically look for food with large grains to fill up on.
Why Use Mini Suet Pellets for Birds?
There are a number of reasons you might choose to use mini pellets rather than full size ones.
1. For starters, you'll get nearly double the pellets for the same weight value, so if you're someone that likes to grab handfuls of product and sprinkle them around, this smaller size pellet will last you longer.
2. If you have smaller birds in your garden, it makes sense to offer them smaller food. It's easier for them to carry in their little beaks and means they can grab and go quickly and safely.
3. Less wastage. Birds that have to break apart larger pellets can create waste when they drop excess suet on the floor. Using a smaller pellet they can grab whole avoids mess in your garden and less product waste.
4. Versatility. Our mini suet pellets are roughly the size of a sunflower seed which means that, unlike regular suet pellets, they're suitable to use in seed feeders. They can also be used straight onto the ground, in ground trays, on tables, in tray feeders and pretty much any way you want to feed them!
Which Birds Will Eat Mini Suet Pellets?
There's no limit to the birds that will eat mini pellets, however, whilst testing on the Ivel Valley farm our pellets have been popular with Blue Tits, Great Tits, Coat Tits, Long Tailed Tits, Robins and all ground feeding birds.
