Siting your bat box

To ensure your bat box is as inviting and effective as possible, consider these key factors when choosing its location:

1. Height: Position the bat box at least 10-15 feet (3-5 meters) above the ground. This height helps protect the bats from predators and provides them with a clear flight path.
2. Sunlight: Bats prefer a warm environment, so place the box where it can receive sunlight for part of the day. Ideally, the box should face southeast or southwest, allowing it to benefit from the morning or late afternoon sun.
3. Clear Flight Path: Ensure the box has a clear entrance, free from obstructions like branches or other structures. Bats need an unobstructed flight path to easily access the box.
4. Sheltered Location: Choose a spot that is sheltered from strong winds and heavy rain. This helps keep the bats comfortable and the box secure.
5. Proximity to Water: If possible, place the bat box near a water source, such as a pond, bird bath, or water dish. Bats are often found near water, where they hunt for insects.
6. Away from Disturbances: Place the box in a quiet area of your garden, away from artificial lighting and regular human activity. Bats are sensitive to disturbance and prefer peaceful environments.
