Offer a unique and engaging way to connect with nature and observe a wide range of feathered friends up close.

Ground feeders for birds will allow you to offer a diverse range of bird foods, such as seeds, grains, and fruits, that will provide essential nutrients to birds, especially during times when natural food sources may be scarce.

Ground bird feeders can also help reduce food waste as they are designed with raised edges or barriers that prevent excessive spillage. This minimises the chances of attracting unwanted pests while ensuring more food reaches the intended bird visitors.

What birds will use ground feeders?

A variety of wild bird species will utilise ground feeders as they are specifically designed to cater to all birds, but especially ground-feeding birds. Some common bird species known to use ground feeders frequently include robins, wrens, blackbirds, house sparrows, song thrushes, tits and finches.

Do birds like ground feeders?

Yes, many bird species are adapted to and prefer a ground feeder as it links to their natural behaviour of scavenging on the floor for food. These feeder provides easy access to the bird food, and it doesn't limit ground-feeding bird species who struggle to eat from feeders without large perches. With a ground feeder, you will give all bird species access to enjoy the bird food you put out for them.

What bird food should I use in ground feeders?

One of the main highlights is that you can use any bird feed in a ground feeder! Bird seed, suet treats, and peanuts are all great options. With the help of an ornithologist, we have even formulated our Ground and Table Bird Mix. Designed especially for ground feeders, this is a no-grow, no-waste mix high in energy for your garden birds to enjoy!

How do you feed ground-feeding birds without attracting pests?

While on the plus side of ground feeders welcoming all garden birds to feed, there is a risk you may attract unwanted pests at the same time. But no matter, we have a solution! Our Ground Guard- Small Mesh works as a barrier that only allows small beautiful birds in, and stops large squirrels and other greedy pests from getting all the food. Just place the Ground Guard over your ground feeder.

Which UK birds are ground feeders?

Several bird species in the UK are ground feeders, meaning they primarily forage for food on the ground rather than in trees, bushes, or hanging bird feeders with small perches. Some common ground-feeding birds in the UK include blackbird, robin, dunnock, chaffinch, house sparrow, wood pigeon, collared dove, and thrushes.

Are ground feeders good for birds?

Yes, ground feeders can be highly beneficial for wild birds as they serve as a valuable food source for all species. Ground-feeding birds have evolved to find their food on the ground, and providing a ground feeder allows them to engage in their natural foraging behaviour. It offers them a familiar and comfortable feeding experience.

What is the best seed for ground feeders?

A popular seed mix that is well-suited for ground feeders would be the Ground and Table Mix. This wheat-free birdseed mix contains all ground-feeding birds' favourites, including sunflower hearts, flaked naked oats, Flaked Maize, peanut granules, and berry suet pellets. With a ground feeder, you are pretty much safe to place any high-quality food in it. If there are drainage holes in the ground feeder, then we recommend avoiding using niger seeds, as the tiny black seed can slip through the whole.
