A fantastic, natural source of wild bird food packed with an abundance of fat (40%) and protein (over 40%). Live worms are ideal for encouraging natural feeding behaviour in all kinds of wild birds but especially for ground feeding birds like Robins, Blackbirds, Chaffinches, Wagtails, and Thrushes.
Mealworms are the larvae of the Tenebrio Molitor (or Mealworm) beetle.
They are a popular type of wild bird food as their wriggly natural encourages the natural feeding habits of our UK birds. As they thrive on a vegetarian diet, they are safe to feed all sorts of birds and wildlife without the risk of fatal diseases that are passed on by offal-fed larvae.
They’re jam packed with protein and fat, making them a hearty meal worm wild birds, particularly in the spring time when breeding adults and fledglings are on the hunt for food sources.
Live Mealworms are also popular with bird and wildlife enthusiasts as they are odourless and relatively easy to store, requiring only room temperature conditions. They’re also resilient little creatures and last a long time in storage if kept on bran (their food source). You can even add in your own vegetables or insect food to keep them wriggling for longer.
Size: Our regular mealworms are approximately 25-30mm in length.
Feeding: Can be fed directly on the ground, on tables or in mealworm and tray hanging feeders with high enough sides to stop them crawling out.
How to Store: Store at room temperature, or slightly cooler, in a ventilated container and in bran for longevity.
