Are peanuts good for birds?

Peanuts are a fantastic feed for garden birds as they are a dense source of calories and energy, providing birds with the fuel they need for foraging, flying, and maintaining body temperature, especially during colder seasons. Peanuts are also a great source of protein and nutrients, which is essential for birds' growth, development, and overall health.

Are your peanuts Aflatoxin safe?

Yes, our peanuts are of the highest quality and are Aflatoxin-safe. Poorer quality peanuts are highly susceptible to mould during growth and storage. In particular, the fungus Aspergillus Flavus releases large quantities of Aflatoxin. If birds have too much exposure to this highly toxic carcinogen, it can build up in their bodies and eventually lead to death.

Here on Ivel Valley farm, our premium peanuts are independently tested, and we only supply those with zero detection of Aflatoxin. This is to ensure the safety of wild birds.

What birds eat peanuts?

In the UK, a variety of bird species are known to enjoy eating peanuts. Common garden birds such as Blue Tits, Great Tits, Coal Tits, Long-Tailed Tits, Great-spotted Woodpeckers and Nuthatches are regular visitors to bird feeders with peanuts. Other species, including Siskins, Chaffinches, and Greenfinches, are known to include peanuts in their diet, particularly during colder months when additional energy is crucial.

Are peanuts safe for birds?

While peanuts can be a nutritious addition to a bird's diet, it's essential to consider a few factors to ensure their safety. If you're offering bird peanuts, they need to be unsalted and unroasted, as too much salt could harm their health. The best bird peanuts to go for are ones that are Aflatoxin-tested. Peanuts are relatively large, and fledglings may have difficulty eating whole peanuts. To minimise the risk of choking, you can provide peanut granules during the nesting season, around April-September.

Can you put whole peanuts out for birds?

Whole peanuts are fine to put out for birds during autumn and winter. In spring and summer, we advise you to put out Peanut Granules instead. While most birds can handle whole peanuts, there is a slight risk of choking, especially for fledgelings. Fledglings usually appear in gardens during the spring and summer, which is why we recommend using Peanut Granules during this time instead.

Do I need to crush peanuts for birds?

While birds can consume whole peanuts, crushing or chopping them can be beneficial, especially during the nesting season. Fledglings (young birds that have recently left the nest) may have difficulty handling and consuming whole peanuts, which could lead to choking. Crushing or chopping peanuts makes it easier for these birds to feed, ensuring they can access the nutritional benefits. You can also purchase Peanut Granules, which are already chopped whole peanuts. During the nesting season, parent birds often feed their nestlings with smaller, bite-sized pieces of food. Peanut Granules can be more suitable for feeding nestlings as parents can easily break them into smaller portions for their offspring.

Why are bird peanuts not fit for human consumption?

Due to the way our bird peanuts are processed and packed, they are unsuitable for human consumption. If you have a peanut allergy, then we also advise that you avoid handling bird peanuts.

Are bird peanuts safe for dogs?

Peanuts themselves are not toxic to dogs, and in fact, many commercial dog treats and foods contain peanuts or peanut butter. While bird peanuts themselves are not toxic, they are high in fat and calories. Excessive consumption can lead to weight gain and other health issues in dogs. If your dog accidentally consumes a small amount, it's unlikely to cause harm, but larger quantities should be avoided. Though uncommon, some dogs may be allergic to peanuts, so it's crucial to monitor them for any signs of a reaction, such as itching, swelling, or digestive upset if they consume peanuts.

What is a good alternative to peanuts for birds?

If you are looking for an alternative to feeding whole peanuts to birds (perhaps during the nesting season or due to allergies), suet pellets are a great bird feed. Suet is a nutritional, high-energy bird feed that many species love and is easier to break apart for fledglings to consume.
