What is White Millet Seed?

White Millet seed comes from the same cultivated grass family as Red Millet. The crop is mainly grown for human and livestock consumption in semi-arid Africa and Asia. The Red Millet seed is tiny, round, and has a sweet, nutty flavour.

 

Is White Millet Seed good for birds?

White Millet seed is a valuable source of carbohydrates and nutrients for wild birds. It may seem an unassuming ingredient, but it is mineral-rich, containing sulphur, phosphorous, magnesium and potassium. All essential in aiding the development of wild birds. Compared to other, cheaper cereals such as wheat, White Millet also contains healthy levels of silica, iron, and vitamin B6.

 

What birds eat White Millet?

White Millet is particularly favoured by House Sparrows and Reed Buntings. Other bird species that enjoy eating White Millet include Yellow Hammers, Collared Doves, and Finches. Some softbill species will also eat White Millet is its small size makes it easily digestible.

 

How to feed White Millet to birds

White Millet is a popular food amongst ground-feeding birds, so a ground feeder will be a fitting choice. Seed feeders and bird tables will also be suitable for distributing Millet seeds.
